When creating a cleaning schedule to keep your home in its best shape possible, vacuuming is one of the most important chores to consider. However, just like other cleaning duties, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution; many things affect your vacuuming schedule.
The good news is you can spare the trouble of creating a schedule from zero all on your own. Here, you’ll find easy-to-digest (and apply) info on how often to vacuum your place and keep it looking great!
How often should you vacuum your floors?
Whether they collect more dust and grime than others or are in busy areas, different types of floors call for different vacuuming frequencies. Don’t get anything wrong, and follow these indications:
- Hard flooring (like tile and vinyl). Due to their smooth surface, these floors won’t collect as much dust as other types. That means you’ll only need to vacuum them once a week. Do a quick sweep before vacuuming to loosen the dirt stuck in the grout.
- Hardwood. Same as hard flooring, hardwood floors don’t get dusty too often. Vacuum them weekly to keep them in good shape. If you have unfinished wood, you’ll need to vacuum it at least twice every week, as dirt can get stuck on the grain—vacuum in its direction!
- Carpeted. Dirt can easily get trapped and accumulate quickly in carpet strands. Vacuum high-pile floors at least thrice a week. If you have carpets in low-traffic areas or they’re low-pile, vacuum them twice a week.
Mattresses and upholstery
Dust on your mattresses is mostly comprised of dead skin, which attracts dust mites that can trigger allergies. Keep your mattress clean as it should be by vacuuming it twice a year: during spring cleaning and at the end of dust mite season in October.
Upholstered furniture also collects dust over time. However, not all of your furniture will have the same vacuuming needs. Furniture that’s not used often (like headboards) only needs to be vacuumed once a month, but things like your couch and its pillows need weekly vacuuming.
What if you have pets?
When talking about vacuuming, pets complicate things even more, as fur can end up in the most unexpected places—especially if you have a pet that sheds a lot.
Ideally, you’ll have to give your home a quick daily vacuum to keep the hair at bay. However, if you don’t have the time to do it, you’ll be fine by carrying out a thorough general vacuum twice or thrice a week, depending on the amount of fur you’re dealing with.
Don’t forget the ceilings and walls!
It might not be something you usually consider, but ceilings and walls need a little care from time to time. However, don’t think you have to vacuum them from end to end, just like your floors.
Focus on corners where cobwebs and dirt tend to accumulate and behind frames and wall decorations. Vacuum these areas once every month or every three months, depending on how much dust your home gets.
