5 Safe And Easy Methods To Clean Inside A Microwave

A nasty microwave doesn’t help your appetite when heating your meals, but cleaning your appliance with strong chemicals and leaving its residue near your food can be way worse.

Luckily, when cleaning the microwave, you can skip the harsh chemical products altogether! These five natural and non-toxic methods are just as good for cleaning your microwave.

Pro tip: always wash the turntable first

Having spills on your turntable is incredibly common, but as easy as it is to get dirty, cleaning it is just as simple! You only need to wash it like any plate from your dinner table, whether in the sink or dishwasher.

Now, you only have to worry about the microwave walls. Here are five methods to help with that.

Method #1. A damp cloth or paper towel

This method is best for dealing with recent spills or fresh stains. You only need to grab a slightly damp microfiber cloth or paper towel and wipe the microwave walls. However, there is one thing to consider: the amount of water.

While moisture is important to help catch crumbs or loose food bits without harming the microwave, you shouldn’t flood it with water and leave the rag dripping. You’ll make a mess and risk damaging the appliance through its openings in the walls.

Method #2. White vinegar

If you’re dealing with a sticky microwave, vinegar’s acidity is perfect for loosening up all those substances stuck to the walls.

To try this method, mix one cup of vinegar and one cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Then, pop it in the microwave for five minutes to create steam, and wipe the stains on the walls with a clean microfiber cloth.

Method #3. Lemon juice

When you heat certain meals, some greasy stains and odors can remain. Luckily, the lemon way is perfect for these cases! This citrus is antibacterial and antiseptic, keeping the microwave healthy for your next meal.

Pour the juice of half a lemon and a cup of water into a microwave-safe bowl. Put the second half of the lemon without squeezing in the bowl. After five minutes in the microwave, remove the bowl and wipe the walls with a clean cloth.

Method #4. Dish soap

Sometimes, a tried-and-true method like dish soap is just what you need. Don’t worry! Using soap in your microwave works perfectly and is safe as long as you rinse the walls afterward!

Simply fill a microwave-safe bowl with soapy water and heat it in the appliance for a minute to create steam. Then, wipe the inner walls with a microfiber cloth or a kitchen sponge. Finally, rinse the interior with another cloth dampened in clear water.

Method #5. Baking soda

Are you struggling with stubborn stains? Then baking soda is perfect for you! This common household item works for dissolving even the greasiest stains, so you can be sure your appliance will be spotless.

Mix baking soda with a little water until you form a paste similar in texture to toothpaste. Then, spread the paste over the stains and let it sit for five minutes. After that time, simply clean it off with a damp cloth.

Note: This method can get a little messy, so make sure to wear gloves!
